Au Pairs (uk)

One of the most influential and forward-thinking bands of the original post-punk era, Au Pairs return more than four decades after their initial run with a powerful new line-up led by founding vocalist and songwriter Lesley Woods. Formed in Birmingham in 1978, the band became renowned for combining sharp political and feminist perspectives with the rhythmic energy of funk, punk and dance music, creating a sound that remains remarkably modern today.

Their landmark 1981 debut album Playing with a Different Sex tackled issues including gender roles, sexuality and domestic violence with a candour that was far ahead of its time. Its influence continues to resonate today, inspiring generations of musicians, including Bikini Kill's Kathleen Hanna, who has often cited Au Pairs as a key influence. Now joined by Estella Adeyeri (Big Joanie), Alex Ward (Pere Ubu) and Jem Doulton (Thurston Moore Group), Lesley Woods has breathed new life into the band's catalogue while also looking towards new material.

Following their first live performances in more than 40 years -including a sold-out run of Dutch shows in early 2026- Au Pairs have proven that their music has lost none of its urgency, intelligence or emotional impact. Direct, rhythmic and utterly compelling, the band's return feels less like a nostalgic reunion and more like a powerful reminder of just how relevant their music remains. We are proud to welcome Au Pairs to Grauzone 2027.
