BUDGIE (UK)
We are incredibly proud and excited to welcome legendary artist Budgie to Grauzone.
Born in 1957 in St. Helens in the North West of England, Budgie studied Fine Art at the Gamble Institute and later at Liverpool College of Art. In 1977, he took a sabbatical from his studies to join a band — or two — a decision that would lead to a defining and influential career in post-punk and experimental music.
Budgie is internationally celebrated for his distinctive drumming on Cut (1979), the groundbreaking debut album by The Slits, and for his work as a writer, arranger and multi-instrumentalist with Siouxsie And The Banshees (1979–1996) and The Creatures (1981–2004). Entirely self-taught, his influences range widely, from Ringo Starr to Mark Rothko, via Maurice Ravel.
At Grauzone, Budgie will present his first solo performance in over 30 years, making this a truly rare and special moment. Alongside the performance, he will also take part in a Q&A session in which he will speak in depth about his recently published book, The Absence: Memoirs of a Banshee Drummer. In this intimate memoir, Budgie reflects on his life in music, his creative process, and decades spent shaping the sound and spirit of post-punk, offering personal insights into both the intensity of life on stage and the quieter spaces in between.
We very much look forward to welcoming Budgie and sharing this exceptional experience together.
