Male Tears (us)

LA synth poppers Male Tears are described as a "goth's love affair with 1980s new wave" blending darkwave, goth rock, EBM, new romantic and futurepop, creating a sound they call "Dark Rave". Releasing records on Avant Records (Nuovo Testamento, Buzz Kull, SDH, Qual) they began as a post-pandemic art project, founded by singer-songwriter James Edward, and has since mutated into a full-fledged weirdo-pop four-piece. Rooted in Edward’s taste for irony, camp, and erratically applied makeup, the band delivers a playful yet biting take on underground music culture. Their sound merges synth-driven pop, goth undertones, and a flair for melodrama, balancing catchy hooks with a satirical edge.

Each album by Male Tears doubles as a critique—of the underground, of romance, of the masks we wear. By blending vulnerability with camp aesthetics, they’ve earned both praise and derision, using both to sharpen their artistic identity. In true postmodern style, the project thrives on contradiction: sweet melodies clash with bitter observations, while their live shows bring theatricality and sweat-soaked abandon to the stage.

As Male Tears continues to evolve, their work embodies the restless spirit of today’s alternative scene: romantic, ironic, and always a little bit tongue-in-cheek. At Grauzone, they’ll present this singular vision for the first time, and we couldn’t be more excited to welcome their uncompromising energy and infectious strangeness.
